David “Mase” Mason Walkerville Sports Club Spirit Award
On Saturday night, the David “Mase” Mason Club Spirit Award was proudly presented. This prestigious award recognises a volunteer of the Walkerville Sports Club who has gone above and beyond in their service to the club.
Congratulations to Andrew “AJ” Jenkins on being the well-deserved recipient of the David Mason Club Spirit Award.
AJ epitomises the spirit of selfless service and dedication that this award seeks to recognise. For over 20 years, AJ has volunteered as our primary cook on senior home game Saturdays, preparing meals and managing the outdoor BBQ setup and pack-down alongside other volunteers. His Saturdays typically begin at 9:00am and finish around 5:00pm, rain or shine.
In addition to his longstanding service to the senior club, AJ has extended his commitment over the past two years by also cooking for the junior football club each Sunday from 8:00am to 4:30pm. Including trial games and finals, this equates to approximately 25 volunteer days each season.
AJ’s contributions extend far beyond cooking. He is responsible for slicing over 100 kilograms of onions each season and actively assists in the purchasing and restocking of supplies for both the BBQ and the canteen. His work supports the sale of a wide range of food offerings—including steak sandwiches, egg and bacon rolls, hamburgers, sausages, marinated chicken, and cheese/chilli kranskys—ensuring high-quality service and vital fundraising outcomes for the club.
The club relies heavily on BBQ and canteen sales for fundraising, and the success of this effort is a direct reflection of AJ’s tireless work and commitment. He is a volunteer who asks for nothing in return, driven solely by his love for the club and its community.
Although AJ currently holds no formal committee position, he has previously served in multiple roles on the Football Club Committee, including President. He has never accepted any honorarium or payment for his efforts. His humility, consistency, and unwavering commitment truly reflect the spirit of David Mason and the values of the Walkerville Sports Club.
Congratulations, AJ, on this well-deserved recognition as the 2nd recipient of the David Mason Club Spirit Award after last years inaugural winner, representing the Junior Football Club, Belinda Elliott
