Round 16, 2016 – A Grade vs Golden Grove
Saturday back on our home ground for a Triple Header, A’s and B’s against Golden Grove, C grade against Gaza.
Before the game we discussed our intention to take the opposition head on and play our style of footy, which we know will trouble sides. The weather was not looking the best, overcast with a strong wind going straight down the ground. After winning the toss and kicking with the wind in the first quarter, the boys got straight down to business and attacked strongly to put a couple of goals on the board immediately. The clearance work and forward movement was working well, putting Golden Grove on the back foot for most of the quarter. Going into the first break Walky’s held a 3 goal lead and the boys were all positive about keeping their momentum going.
The second quarter began and now the opposition had steadied and slowly started to work their way back into the game. Our second quarters of late have been poor and the boys were very much aware of the need to run with and continue to apply pressure, to reduce the scoring impact from the opposition. Once again we went away from our game plan and structures, chasing kicks, giving Golden Grove to much space which then became a constant stream of shots on goal for them. Our limited attack into our forward lines resulted in gaining us one goal for the quarter as opposed to the opposition’s 6-4 with the wind.
At half time the message was loud and clear, get back to playing to our strengths, sticking with the game plan that has proven to work albeit has to be maintained for four quarters. The boys realised that their second quarter effort was not acceptable. The third quarter got under way and once again we were into attack, hitting the scoreboard to put the pressure back onto the opposition. Scoring was at a premium with the focus from both sides trying to get the all important break on the other. The lads had regained better composure and were using the ball more effectively, resulting on the scoreboard ticking over. Going in to three quarter time the margin was back to a two goal lead by Golden Grove.
At the last break the boys realised that although the opposition had use of the strong wind in the last quarter, this game was going to go down to the wire. As the quarter got underway the rain came which actually helped drop the wind back, so it was going to be an arm wrestle going forward and scoring. As the quarter went on both sides attacked with intent, going goal for goal and into time on the margin was only 5 points. Unfortunately we were going into attack from a free kick, which went forward to score a goal only to be disallowed by the umpire, saying that he hadn’t called play on. From a turnover the ball went forward to the opposition who quickly scored a point, margin now 1 goal. With time running out, another turnover resulted with another goal being kicked by the opposition, margin 2 goals, game over. The boys knew that once again a lapse in concentration, 2nd Quarter had cost us a win, as for 3 quarters we had outscored Golden Grove. We are now focused on this week’s all important game against Gepps Cross, bring it on.
