Round 12, 2016 – A Grade vs Seaton
Game day Saturday 2nd July, the second Triple header for all three teams at home for this season.
After the C grade then the B grade games had been played, the Oval was looking a little bit worse for wear. It was shaping up to being a hard slog with the ground being very heavy under foot.
The lads were looking forward to the match as in the first round Walky’s had beaten Seaton by a couple of goals, although they had quite a few new players in this time around. Game On.
The mood in the lead up to game time had been positive and everything was set for the game to begin, with both the C’s and then the B’s having had comfortable wins before our match.
The game started and Seaton were quickly out of the blocks putting on 3 quick goals without miss. Our boys settled and then counter attacked several times but were inaccurate in front of goal, kicking points not the much needed goals required to be right in the mix. Deep into the quarter we had our first casualty in Luke Hastings who had damaged his AC joint in his shoulder, this was quickly followed up by Adam Law suffering a groin injury. Quarter time scores were WFC 1-4 trailing Seaton Ramblers 6-2.
The second quarter produced a much needed improvement from the first, no quarter given by either side but our boys controlled the play for around 75% of the quarter. Unfortunately although we had our chances, accuracy in front of goal was costly, kicking 1-5 for the term, our normally accurate forwards were having a game to forget. On the flip side Seaton went forward once to kick a major. Just before the half time siren we suffered another injury, this time to Ryan Stacey with a hit to his head giving him blurred vision.
Half time, WFC 2-9, Seaton 7-2.
At the break the boys realised that we needed to step up to get ourselves back in the game, some positional changes were made and everyone was ready for the 2nd half to proceed. Having no interchange for the second half meant that players rotations were going to be an issue, with changes made on field to get some relief from the heavy slog that the match had become.
The third quarter got under way and Seaton started to go further ahead, pushing forward regularly while our boys were starting to chase jumpers all over the field. The pressure from the opposition and their confidence was growing the further the quarter went on. To our lads credit they persisted for the remainder of the quarter and at 3 quarter time scores were WFC 2-12 to Seaton 11-6.
At the break to the boys credit, there was still the belief that they would certainly give it all in the last quarter and stay competitive. Up to this point Seaton Ramblers had been the better side for most of the game. They had worked their interchange well, giving them fresh legs continually and getting first use of the ball. The further the quarter went on, the more dominant Seaton became, as we simply started to run out of options, even with some positional changes to try and get a lift and hold them out.
Finally the siren sounded with Seaton Ramblers running out comfortable winners.
